What is Child and Adolescent counseling?

Child Counselling is an effective way to support children or adolescents who may be struggling at school or with friends or other relationships. Children often find it difficult to understand their feelings and how to respond to their own needs. Their life gets complex due to unresolved matters that can lead to common issues such as depression, anger, anxiety, fear, stress, low confidence, falling grades, and low performance in school, sports, and other activities.

Children and Adolescents find talking and communicating to receive help, difficult. Often because the range of emotions is too much for them to handle and they do not feel safe to open up.

Counseling is a safe and comfortable space to open up and lean to an adult who can assure them of a judgment-free and private place to vent and seek advice.

What to expect from Child or Adolescent Counselling

Through the partnership with your therapist, you will be able to learn coping mechanisms and develop skills that you need to traverse through life’s many challenges whether it is with your friends or family or at school.

After a few sessions, you should be able to see your own needs and their solutions in a better light. Depending upon your needs and age, your therapist can help you to communicate effectively and deal with the issues that bother you.

When should you seek counseling for yourself as a parent or for your child?

Parenting can be hard and confusing. Modern parents are often confronted by questions such as:

  • How to raise successful and happy children within my value system?
  • The value systems of myself and my spouse are different and how must I traverse this difference to raise a happy child?
  • How can I be gentle and respectful with my child while inculcating the right moral values?
  • Am I doing the right thing?
  • Is my parenting philosophy correct and well suited to my child’s personality?

These are just a few examples of dilemmas faced by parents today. If you feel the weight of parenting or doubt your parenting style/ philosophy often, you may benefit from therapy.

Therapy can guide you into being your best self as a parent and provider while also being kind and compassionate to your wellbeing.

Below are some common issues faced by parents that are possible red flags in the care of their children and warrant therapy/counseling.

  • Behavior patterns of your child that trouble you and them

  • Your child lacks social skills or learning abilities or you feel the child is incompetent at performing day-to-day tasks such as play.

  • Child or family is dealing with some crises and they find it difficult to cope with it

  • You feel inept at helping and supporting your child

  •  A child or family may be going through something and the child needs an adult confidante to process it and cope with it.

These are just a few examples of when you can seek counseling. There are many more scenarios as each family and its needs are unique. Parenting is a huge responsibility and we are your partners in helping you through this undertaking.

Counseling Programs by Age

Children are naturally disposed to be unique and non-conforming. Each age group has its own nuances. We believe that the earlier an intervention is sought the better it is. Therefore we offer counseling services from the age of 5 for both children and parents. We conduct scientifically created psychometric tests to gauge and understand the child’s uniqueness.

Instead of merely relying on human interpretation we use the knowledge of science and on-ground experience. After the tests, we can scientifically arrive at a diagnosis and help the child and parents.

For Age 5 – 10

  • Academic domain – At RVCS our experienced psychologists conduct psychometric tests for identifying the problem areas if any, such as, specific learning disability, anxiety, phobia, etc, and to gauge the interest, aptitude, and IQ of the child.

This is followed by individual talk therapy where we help them with coping mechanisms and life skills such as strategies to boost memory and reduce exam-related stress.

  • Behavioral and Emotional domain We help children and parents deal with issues related to behavior and emotions. After the first few years of a child’s life come the more turbulent and difficult years. These years are full of peer pressure, growing awareness of one’s own body and mind, and a need to be liked by those around the child.  We help by creating a balance in the need to fit in and honor one’s individual and personal needs.

We start with a detailed intake to understand the issues being faced. This is followed by a battery of psychometric tests to ascertain (or refute) the initial diagnosis of the therapist.

We deal with issues such as ADHD, conduct problems, anxieties, fears, low self-confidence, low self-esteem, anger, aggression, bullying, and more. We follow the assessment with individual counseling sessions.

  • Relationship domain – We offer expert counseling on issues such as peer relations and parent-child relations.
  • Remedial classes We have the expertise in conducting remedial classes for children with learning disabilities (LD) and attention issues. These classes often come in handy to help and mentor children and parents struggling due to known and unknown Learning Disabilities.

For Age 11 – 14

This is the age where children experience puberty and undergo a series of changes. This is a particularly difficult time for both kids and their parents. Each one is new at handling what’s coming on. It can be particularly tough for the children because while the surging hormone means that their whole life is taken for a toss, their personal and emotional relationships are affected along with grades and other activities. This is an extremely daunting time for the parents too because they fail to understand the reasons leading to the behavior and attitudes of their children and are unable to effectively help them to scale through the difficulties.

We take details of the concerns of both parents and children in the first few sessions and conduct a battery of psychometric tests for identifying the problem areas if any. Very often it is only a matter of being pubescent for the children and needing support and guidance to scourge through the difficult years.

Dr. Virk is extremely experienced and talented in the matters of adolescents and teens. Her doctoral thesis was focused on the age group.

The initial intake is followed up by a battery of psychometric tests. These will rule out or successfully identify areas such as Learning Disabilities, IQ, Exam Stress, Anxiety, Phobia, and more.

We lead this up with talk therapy before suggesting any further interventions. During talk therapy one of the focus is to teach the parents and kids methods to cope with the various stressors of life better.

We particularly focus on the kids to be able to talk about problems faced by them and receive help from their caretakers, parents, and therapist effectively.

We help the parents to see the problems dealt with by their kids as an opportunity to forge better relationships with them and help them to grow up into adults that they as parents want their kids to be. Training the parents to see the issues as a byproduct of puberty and not as a personal attack is one of the special ways to help children in this age group.

For the parents, however, this period means dealing with several changes in their child’s behavior.

Towards the end of the teens, children become young adults with newly acquired and daunting personality changes. Their personality and individuality are yet to solidify into something unique that is completely dependable. This period is full of trying to use their adulthood and the privileges it brings. Decisions taken during this time shape one’s future and therefore guidance of grownups and parents is paramount.
